The program of a summercamp offers users the specific opportunity to sense and experience his/her environment in a different way than usual. In general buildings offer conceiled spaces to create a comfortable indoor climate regarding temperature, light and shelter. In case of the summercamp, experiencing the natural environment by the use of all senses is considered as more important than creating an indoor climate as such. The mild weather conditions in summer allow for structures which offer sheltered spaces that have open shells to the outside world. There is no need to conceil the user or to try creating an artificial climate.

I have been doing research into plans of pavilions as these structures are generally known for having similar qualities. Important for me was to find projects which show more sophisticated ways of defining (gradual) boundaries between outside and “inside” than merely a shell. In the attached image, every row brings a specific concept forward, but each project reaches this in it’s own unique way. The top row of plans show the benefit reached when various objects are combined into a whole. Specifically the modular approach interests me as one could explore the possibilites of a system as such in different terrains and conditions. The second row creates this connection with big and organic movements. The third row of projects demonstrates how a strong relation between a structure and it’s environment is constructed with minimal elements.

Furthermore, I have been testing how the hillclimber script reacts after changing variables such as the angle in which it moves and the amount of steps it looks ahead/right/left.

Precedents, Posterization in Python and Participatory Processes

Without anything specific in mind, I started out by researching the camp typology in a broad sense, collecting examples spanning from military camps to inca ruins. The collection of precedents is therefore quite diverse, not (yet, at least) neatly categorized by any specific parameters. However, a few different patterns emerge, such as strict, square grid compositions or more rounded landscape excavations.

The terraced landscapes in Moray and Dalhalla in combination with Pablo’s Python script to modify the heightmap image file inspired me to experiment with programming a script that modifies the heightmap to create a posterized, lower resolution version of the image that in turn could generate a terraced landscape in Rhino. I am not yet sure whether this type of terraforming is what I want to work with moving forward in the project, but at least I had fun writing my first few lines of code.

At present, my area of interest for the camp project is related to participatory and/or emergent design, where the participants of the camp are the ones designing/building/influencing the camp in some way. Instead of ending up with a finished ”project” showing a final end result for what the camp will look like, it might be interesting to work towards a more speculative, ”simulated” result, showing a possible outcome of a process, perhaps happening over a longer period of time. An idea on how take this vague and overly ambitious idea forward is to analyze settlements that have emerged organically without architects to identify the rules and patterns of the configurations. I am also planning on looking more at the specifics of the site, as well as gathering more references on participatory and emergent design processes.

Party or Prison?

The theme of the camp has been interpreted as a place for temporary inhabitation, existing under a governed or imposed order. In doing so I have considered typologies such as hospitals, festivals, prisons, refugee camps, schools and military settlements. Through various spatial approaches all demonstrate a non-hierarchical approach to settlement making, with repetition of living quarters existing around common shared spaces and infrastructural frameworks.

The exception to the way this is organised in plan is the ancient city of Çatalhöyük, which has no streets or footpaths. A typology like this could be interesting to explore in section, if the role of circulation/ structure/ drainage exist at different levels to that of the living spaces. Could the camp be underground? Or elevated in the trees?
